Tina Cancio owns Balance Salon Spa, which she founded independently in 2008 alongside her business partner and spouse, Carlos Cancio. Since its inception, the salon has been a community staple, being local, American-owned, and operated.
Tina’s journey in the beauty industry began at a young age. In their family salon, Tina grew up alongside her mother, a cosmetologist, and she developed a deep appreciation for the craft. She has been a loyal advocate of the AVEDA brand for over 40 years, immersing herself in its culture and values.
After receiving dual Bachelor of Arts degrees in Macro Sociology and Psychology from Roosevelt University in Chicago (1992), Tina spent over 25 years in the food and beverage industry, holding executive positions with global brands. However, due to chronic cancer, Tina retired from the corporate world to focus on her health. Today, she manages the financial and operational aspects virtually, supporting the team behind the scenes.
In addition to her role at Balance Salon Spa, Tina is a passionate online volunteer. She serves as an LGL Leukemia Community Leader at the Rare Genomics Institute and advocates for cancer patients on the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) Advocacy Committee, Moffitt Cancer Center, and UVA Cancer Hospital.
Carlos Cancio has been integral to Balance Salon Spa for over 31 years. With 38 years of experience in the hair care industry, Carlos began his career in his native Cuba, where he started as a barber. After relocating to the United States and becoming a United States Citizen, he continued to refine his craft, driven by his natural talent and a desire to build a successful career in beauty.
Carlos’ journey in the industry began in 1994 when he became an apprentice at the very salon he and his wife, Tina, now own. He assisted with shampoos and cleaning, all while not speaking a word of English. In 1996, he began learning English and started his career as a Junior Stylist. By 1997, he had advanced to Main Stylist, and in 2002, he earned his Master Stylist certification. Over the years, Carlos has worked tirelessly to elevate his craft and continually improve his skills.
As co-owner and salon manager of Balance Salon Spa, Carlos oversees all in-salon daily operations, guest relations, and employee management. Together with his business partner and wife, Tina Cancio, he has helped guide the salon to its current success. Though Carlos no longer accepts guests, he leads an exceptional team of talented Hair Artists who continue to deliver outstanding results.
Carlos and his spouse, Tina, along with their two adult children, live in the Carrollwood area of Tampa Bay.
